Book Review: The House of Mirrors - Erin Kelly

I got through this book in 7 days. Just one week. It's the only time I have ever stuck to "I want to read a book per week" and I can honestly see why. It wasn't just because I was disciplined, it was the actual book, and maybe the fact that the more I read the more I am able to visualise the characters and the stories like a Netflix series in my head. There are so many little clues and twists in this book that I genuinely had some jaw drop moments, even in the final couple of chapters when I thought it was 'winding down', there was more to be discovered and unearthed.

Let's start with the cover, I didn't get it at first but once you get into the second and third part of the book you start to understand it, plus it really helps to visualise, if you get what I mean ..... (no spoilers here although with this one that's very difficult!)

The blurb actually does very very little to tell you the story or anything that happens or even give you a clue as to what is to come, so I will try and expand without ruining the story for you. I think one of the biggest and best parts of this book is Kelly's ability to introduce new characters and fit them seamlessly into the story with no questions asked. You merely go "aahh yes okay" and continue on the journey. You also will pay attention to details you didn't realise you did, or realise you needed to. Small little things like annoying dog walkers, phrases that repeat throughout the book, types of fabric and symbols that carry the story forward. Not to mention it's written from multiple points of view so you get to feel it from both sides of the story, plus the amount of times I almost audibly said "oh my GOD" whilst reading was probably the most out of any book I have read recently.

It's not really a mystery per-se, more of an unfolding. You get bits of the story revealed in increments but they are never the details you thought they would be, and it all builds up to the ending, which isn't even really an ending once you get there because it gives the impression it's not over and that everything is going to unravel, but that gets left to your imagination. Not in an "I wish I knew what happened way" but an "oh no, here we go again" way.

It's descriptive in the way you would say a production is beautiful, it's detailed, it's a page turner, it's not as relatable as other books and you feel as though you're an observer rather than putting yourself in their shoes but makes it equally more of a 'show'. I wouldn't say it's lighthearted but it's not heavy either, it's just enjoyable and twisty.

I wish I could say more but I don't want to ruin the experience for anyone else the way I enjoyed it, having known pretty much nothing about the book when I picked it up.

If you've read it, let me know what you think! (NO SPOILERS! Maybe use letters for character names?)

Erin Kelly also has many other books so I need to read some of those too!
