Work Life Balance - #BigSmalBusiness 2017
On Saturday the 1st April I attended the Big Small Business event. Created by Monica and Laura as a way of bringing together women (and some men) that all have the same goal of making their business dreams a reality and the ideas, hardships and everything in-between of setting it up.
A panel talk with Laura Turner (Hero Stockbridge) was all about pivots in your career, something I always found hard to deal with. But they explained the importance of finding different paths and maybe embracing when things don't go the way you thought they would. I once saw a campaign in a Selfridges Christmas window that said 'Always be open'. Whether I or you or anyone else likes it or not, you have to be open to new things and directions. New ideas come from anywhere and they can change the course of your life or business for the better.
Learning the value of money is something I've found most difficult. I used to make way more when I didn't understand it, because I wouldn't care as much. But now maybe a reflection of how I value myself is reflected in the fact I don't think I'm worth the money. Even though I know my work is good and I do know what I'm doing.
The work life balance of owning your own business is this strange blurry line that sometimes strays too far on either side. Especially if you're work is your life, that's what you love. Surely trying to cut down and find 'balance' will in time jeopardise your success, no? If work is life then I guess I have life sussed, because that is all I seem to do! But is having it all under control just a scam? Does anyone really get it? Kristina Karlsson, founder of Kikki.K spoke about how she gets up at 5am and meditates and writes a journal of what she's grateful for or equally frustrated about. So these stresses or thoughts are eliminated from distractions during the day.
I had such a lovely time at the event and can't wait for the next one. I think it's so great to sometimes take a day out like this and really get inspired. Find new things that you love and integrate them into what you already do or start afresh.
I wish you well on your journey to success and I'll see you there! We all have a different path, but we can all enjoy it together.
"There ought to be something very special about the boundary conditions of the universe. And what can be more special than that there is no boundary? And there should be no boundary to human endeavour. We are all different. However bad life may seem, there is always something you can do, and succeed at. While there is life, there is hope."
